Overview of ‘Inserts’

A product insert is a small piece of paper, card or brochure that is printed and physically inserted into your product packaging, usually added to the packages by the supplier or a business that packs and prepares your product. Inserts are designed to provide useful information to your customer. Inserts are printed in a variety of sizes and formats so its important to check with your supplier/agent to confirm acceptable formats.

There are varied types of ‘Inserts’

  • Thank You’ notes
  • Product user manual/instructions/care information
  • Product usage scenarios (different ways you can use the item, commonly used for fitness equipment)
  • Guarantee/warranty information

Some business owners combine a few different types of inserts into one combined document. Product inserts are not a necessity however, we strongly recommend the use of ‘Thank You’ inserts when you are a new seller to generate product reviews. A simple printed statement like “We would love to hear from you!” can significantly increase your chances of getting a review.

Benefits of using ‘Thank You’ inserts

Asking for honest product reviews, while thanking your customer for their purchase is the main purpose for using this style card. This needs to be done in a neutral way, consciously not appearing to try and influence the customer to only leave positive reviews. Amazon encourages customers reviews of both your product and your seller store, to help customers make informed decisions about the products they purchase. According to Amazons recent policy updates you cannot ask for positive reviews or ask a reviewer to change or remove their review, although there are many sellers that do this and have not yet been caught. Ultimately reviews are good for your business to encourage future purchases and increase your seller ranking, as potential customers cannot see your product physically in a store. ‘Thank You’ inserts are usually simple 1 sided cards that add value to your business at a low cost.

Best practice for implementing ‘Thank You’ inserts

  • Direct your customers to social media such as Facebook, Instagram or blogs
  • Provide online links to product instruction manuals
  • Additional opportunity to brand your product by including your brand logo
  • Mitigate negative reviews by encouraging customers to reach out if the product is not working like it should

Other types of inserts

Other types of inserts can also be utilised such as user manuals, usage scenarios, and warranty information. These types of inserts are usually more complex as you may need to source additional information or images to build these documents and they often require multiple pages bound in a booklet style, increasing cost and overall complexity of launching the product. Some suppliers have product instruction manuals available for products, and on rare occasions allow you to customise these booklets. Suppliers that do not have instruction manuals will often limited or no capability to print a manual.
