Session #2: Understanding Amazon Marketplaces

Amazon has many different Marketplaces. Each marketplace is a different country. For example Amazon.com is USA Marketplace and Amazon.com.au is Australian Marketplace. As of late 2020 Amazon has 16 active marketplaces. Each marketplace has its own website and a different Amazon Seller Central Account setup.

Before you open your Amazon account

  1. Confirm your marketplace strategy – which country or countries will you launch in?
  2. Setup and verify your Amazon Marketplace store (in the correct country marketplace) before commencing the listing process

Double check the website URL/Address is correct

Many new sellers don't pay attention to the website they are signing up to. Its easy to accidentally sign up to the wrong marketplace by accident if you don't pay attention.

Some top tips include:

  • Computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones can all interact differently with websites and browsers online.
  • Be aware your device may default to a different marketplace/country depending on what you have typed in or clicked.
  • Always look at the website address URL when looking at competitors products or when opening your Amazon account
  • Look for the letters that follow Amazon dot…. www.Amazon.?? this will reveal which marketplace website you are in. Sometimes there is also a country flag in the top corner of your browser too.

Unified Accounts

Generally, you need a separate seller account (individual) for every country (marketplace). There is an exception of 2 groups of “Unified” accounts for some North America or Europe locations.

Unified Account selling can be a complex and not very relevant for beginners. You don't have to sell in another unified marketplace in Seller Central - just ignore the other country options. You can use the toggle selection at the top of your Seller Central screen to work in the marketplace country you wish to sell in.

Most of our students choose to AU & USA are not within a unified region together.

For beginners we do not recommend focusing on multiple marketplaces - it's easy to get overwhelmed.

Keep your marketplace strategy simple for launch if you can
